Richard Gerstl (1883-1908) is considered the first Austrian Expressionist. Even before Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele, he created an autonomous expressive oeuvre which was full of stylistic innovations and thus radically contradicted the conventions of his time. More than 25 years after the last monographic presentation of the artist’s work in Austria, the Leopold Museum dedicated a comprehensive exhibition to Richard Gerstl – the first to offer an in-depth exploration of his role models, contemporaries and his influence on subsequent generations of artists.
