Female Images
From Biedermeier to Early Modernism

Launched last year, the series of themed presentations featuring the permanent collection continues with an emphasis on female images from the Leopold Collection. Corresponding to the period central to the collection, the selection comprises works by Austrian artists from 1830 to 1930. Female depictions were initially mostly limited to portraits. If female images went beyond portrait depictions, they often showed women assuming traditional roles, such as that of wife, mother and guardian of the family. In the past especially, female depictions were determined by the view of male artists, who often allotted the role of model, and especially that of nude model, to women. Renderings depicting women as professionals are much rarer. A special focus of the exhibition is on works by female artists from the Leopold Collection.
