LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN
PHOTOGRAPHY AS ANALYTICAL PRACTICE

12th Nov. 2021–6th March 2022
Extended until 27th March 2022!
Level -1

Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) is one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. Rather than focusing on his ground-breaking philosophical writings – above all his early main work Tractatus logico-philosophicus (1921) – or their impact on the fine arts, the comprehensive exhibition at the Leopold Museum highlights Wittgenstein’s interest in photography. Featuring more than 200 objects, the presentation showcases Wittgenstein as a photographer – as an author, collector and arranger of photographs – while highlighting biographical aspects and connections to his work as a philosopher. The exhibition focuses primarily on his practical and theoretical use of photography and on his profound understanding of the medium in all its facets, between indexical trace and artefact, between memory aid and epistemical vehicle, and between evidence and lie.
