Leopold Museum in Vienna to exhibit the world’s most valuable work

29.10.2021

On display from 4th November at the Leopold Museum.

The most valuable work in the world cannot be found in New York, Paris, Shanghai or London, but – as of the evening of 3rd November – in Vienna. The Leopold Museum was able to secure this work for its collection and visitors.

“It feels very special to be in a position to not only make key works of the 19th and 20th centuries accessible to a wide audience but now also the world’s most valuable work to date”, comments Mag. Hans-Peter Wipplinger, the Director of the Leopold Museums. “In order to do justice to the exhibit’s value with the right preparation, it won’t be on display until early November.”

The identity of the world’s most valuable work and of the artist responsible for it remains unclear for now.

“We will unveil the work on the evening of 3rd November at the Leopold Museum to all visitors and will subsequently put it on display as a central exhibit which can be enjoyed by everyone”, explains Hans-Peter Wipplinger.

The Leopold Museum, which is home to some 6,000 works, houses one of the world’s most important collections of Austrian art from the second half of the 19th century and Modernism. It includes the world’s most comprehensive Egon Schiele collection, featuring more than 220 works by the artist, as well as large work complexes by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Richard Gerstl and many others. In keeping with a holistic concept of art, the Leopold Museum’s collection further comprises Jugendstil and Wiener Werkstätte furnishings and artisan craftwork.

To this day, the expansion of the collection is one of the Leopold Museum’s central tasks aimed at enlarging the main emphases of the collection beyond its core pieces.

The world’s most valuable work to date will be shown from 4th November in the Leopold Museum’s atrium.
